Counter terrorism officers have made two arrests in connection with a fire that destroyed four Jewish community ambulances in north London earlier this week — though investigators have warned that at least one further suspect is believed to have been involved.
The two men, aged 47 and 45, were detained on Wednesday morning at separate addresses in north-west and central London. Both were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remain in police custody, with searches being carried out at the properties.
The arrests relate to an attack in the early hours of Monday 23 March, when four vehicles belonging to Hatzola — a volunteer-run ambulance service serving the Golders Green area — were set alight shortly after 1.30am.
Counter Terrorism Policing London, which is leading the investigation, described the development as a significant step forward, while cautioning that the inquiry is far from over. Commander Helen Flanagan said CCTV footage from the night of the attack indicated that at least three individuals were present, and that efforts to identify and apprehend all those responsible are continuing.
“We have been working around the clock since this appalling attack took place,” Commander Flanagan said, adding that the local Jewish community’s support had been appreciated throughout.
With community anxiety still running high, policing in the area is being reinforced. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing across north-west London, said a bespoke security plan would remain in place in the coming days and weeks, including specialist officers, visible armed patrols and additional resources deployed around vulnerable locations across the capital.
He was careful to note that the heightened police presence is precautionary in nature and not linked to any specific threat. Officers will continue to work alongside Counter Terrorism colleagues and engage with local communities throughout.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 415 of 23 March. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
