Alexander Skarsgard attended a New York screening of his new film Wicker with his father, actor Stellan Skarsgard, offering family support as he promoted the unusual comedy.
The 50-year-old Emmy-winning actor appeared at AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Tuesday evening, alongside co-stars Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki and Peter Dinklage. Directors and co-writers Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson were also present.
Skarsgard’s outfit provided a playful nod to the film. He wore a black suit over a T-shirt bearing the words “Lick My Worm”.
Wicker is described as a comedic fable about sex, marriage and social convention. Colman plays an ostracised fisherwoman who commissions Dinklage’s basketmaker to create a husband, with Skarsgard portraying the resulting wicker figure.
The character’s unexpected appeal sparks jealousy, fascination and upheaval in the village, threatening to disrupt its established way of life.
Skarsgard has also joked about the prosthetics used during filming. Discussing the wicker costume, he said: “Most male actors dream of playing Hamlet at some point in their career. I never did. My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker. Thanks to our wonderful directors, Eleanor and Alex, and the brilliant artists at Weta in New Zealand, my dream has finally come true.”
Colman praised the project as “one of the best and most original scripts I’d read in a long time”. She added: “Alex is funny, intelligent, and beautiful anyway — in the wicker costume, he’s breathtaking. Everything is exaggerated; he’s a work of art. Alex fills the Wicker Husband with a beautiful soul.”
Wicker will be released in selected cinemas on October 23, followed by a wider release on October 30.
