Alisson Becker’s Liverpool future has come under fresh scrutiny, with Juventus reportedly monitoring the Brazil international as the club considers its long-term goalkeeping plans.
The 33-year-old remains Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper and has started every league match this season. However, there have been no new contract talks, despite the club exercising an option earlier this year to keep him at Anfield until the end of the campaign.
Juventus monitoring Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson
Juventus could revive their interest in Alisson after being unable to sign him during the summer. Their need for a goalkeeper has increased after Kamil Grabara underwent cruciate ligament surgery and is expected to be sidelined for six to seven months.
Veteran goalkeeper Neto has been brought in as emergency cover, but Juventus are understood to remain alert to the possibility of recruiting Alisson. A move could become more realistic if Liverpool do not open discussions over an extension.
Any decision by Liverpool would have to take account of Alisson’s continued performances. He helped secure a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth with a reaction save from Evanilson that earned a nomination for the Premier League Save of the Month award.
Alisson has also recorded 138 clean sheets in 336 appearances for Liverpool, moving him fourth on the club’s all-time list for goalkeepers.
Liverpool face decision over Alisson and Mamardashvili
Liverpool already have a potential successor in Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was signed with the future in mind. Andoni Iraola has given the younger goalkeeper opportunities in cup competition, adding to the questions over how the transition should be managed.
There is currently no obvious footballing reason for Liverpool to move on from Alisson while his performances remain at such a high level. The club must nevertheless weigh that form against Mamardashvili’s development and the need to establish a clear long-term number one.
Extending Alisson’s contract could allow Liverpool to retain his experience while gradually increasing Mamardashvili’s responsibilities. If negotiations fail to progress, however, Juventus may see an opportunity to sign an established goalkeeper with extensive experience at the end of his current deal.
