Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has suffered a fresh setback after the Atletico Madrid forward moved towards appointing an agent with close links to Barcelona.
The Argentina international was a major target for Mikel Arteta’s side during the summer, but Alvarez was understood to favour a move to Barcelona. The transfer collapsed when Atletico refused to sell him to a direct La Liga rival.
Arsenal have retained their interest, yet the player’s latest decision has renewed concerns that Barcelona remains his preferred destination.
Arsenal concerned by Julian Alvarez agent decision
SPORT reports that Alvarez is considering Pablo Barquero as his new representative after ending his long-standing relationship with Fernando Hidalgo.
Barquero also represents Rodri and was involved in the midfielder’s move from Manchester City to Barcelona during the summer. That existing relationship has heightened Arsenal’s fears that the Catalan club could once again have an advantage.
Alvarez reportedly became frustrated by the failure to secure a move away from Atletico before parting company with Hidalgo. His potential appointment of Barquero would provide Barcelona with a direct connection to an agent already familiar with the club.
Barcelona sporting director Deco suggested last month that Alvarez was “in the past”, after the club failed to sign him. Reuters also reported that Barcelona had adapted successfully in attack and were no longer actively pursuing the Argentine at that stage.
However, the situation could still change. Alvarez’s preference for Barcelona during the summer, combined with his proposed new representation, has left Arsenal concerned that the club may remain his favoured option.
Arsenal can offer the forward a role across the attack. He can operate centrally, drop into a deeper position or move into wider areas, while his pressing and Premier League experience are viewed as fitting Arteta’s approach.
The Gunners may also be in a stronger financial position, while Atletico could prefer to sell to a club outside Spain rather than strengthen Barcelona. The decisive issue, though, may be whether Alvarez’s own preference has changed.
If Barcelona revive their interest, Arsenal could find that persuading the player is more difficult than reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid.
