Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Sturm Graz midfielder Luca Weinhandl, with the 17-year-old reportedly being considered ahead of the January transfer window.
The Austrian has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa and Brighton, after establishing himself in Sturm Graz’s senior set-up.
Arsenal are understood to have sent scouts to watch Weinhandl and made initial contact over a possible move. Mikel Arteta and the club’s recruitment staff reportedly see him as a long-term midfield prospect rather than an immediate first-team solution.
Arsenal assess Sturm Graz midfielder Luca Weinhandl
Weinhandl broke into the Sturm Graz first team last season, making 10 Austrian Bundesliga appearances. He has continued to feature regularly during the 2026-27 campaign.
The 190cm midfielder has made five league appearances this season, totalling 373 minutes. His league statistics include a 70 per cent pass-completion rate, 31 duels won from 60 contested and 11 tackles.
He has also gained experience in Europe, playing four Champions League matches this season and starting three of them. UEFA records show that he has scored once and played 289 minutes in the competition.
Weinhandl’s physical presence and experience at senior level are understood to be among the factors attracting Arsenal’s interest. His ability to contribute defensively, as well as his technical qualities, has helped place him on the club’s radar.
Arsenal already have an established senior midfield, which could allow the teenager to develop gradually if a move were to take place. However, his 70 per cent passing figure suggests he remains a player with significant room for improvement.
A move from Austria to England at the age of 17 would also represent a major adjustment, but Arsenal’s reported interest reflects a willingness to invest in potential and develop young talent over the longer term.
