Arsenal have been urged to make an ambitious January transfer bid for Manchester City striker Erling Haaland amid uncertainty surrounding the club’s future.
TalkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham suggested the Gunners should explore a move for the Norway international, whose goalscoring record has established him as one of the leading forwards in world football.
“I was thinking to myself, just imagine Man City get relegated to the North West Counties Premier Division,” Durham said.
“And all those players want to leave. Would any of those players get into the PSG side? I couldn’t really think of too many.
“Then, I thought Erling Haaland would get into any side in the world, his goal rate is phenomenal – and then an idea struck me.
“Arsenal in January should go for Erling Haaland.”
Could Arsenal sign Erling Haaland?
Haaland has scored 172 goals in 207 appearances for Manchester City and has already found the net 10 times in his first nine games of the current season.
The 26-year-old would be expected to attract major interest if Manchester City were relegated or expelled from the Premier League as a result of the ongoing charges against the club. However, a move to Arsenal would present significant financial difficulties.
Haaland is reported to earn about £400,000 a week, which would place him substantially above Arsenal’s current highest earner, Bukayo Saka, whose wages are understood to be £300,000 per week.
Arsenal could decide that signing a world-class striker justified breaking their existing wage structure. City, however, would be likely to favour a sale overseas if they retained control of the situation.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs expected to have the resources to compete for Haaland’s signature, potentially putting them ahead of Arsenal in any transfer race.
