Aston Villa are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Sergio Ramos on a free transfer, with the experienced defender being considered as Unai Emery looks to strengthen a defence affected by injuries and a difficult start to the season.
The 40-year-old has been without a club since leaving Monterrey in December 2025. Reports from Spain indicate that negotiations are progressing, with a medical examination said to be scheduled for next week.

Ramos made 34 official appearances during his time in Mexico, scoring eight goals. He has continued training independently and is understood to be keen to return to competitive football.
A move to Villa Park would represent the former Spain international’s first spell in the English top flight. He was linked with Manchester United during the summer, while Newcastle were also reported to have shown interest, but neither move materialised.
The latest reports suggest Villa have now emerged as a serious option, with Emery keen to add the veteran defender to his squad.
Villa defence hit by injuries and departures
Villa’s interest comes after defensive problems were exposed during their defeat by Nottingham Forest. Pau Torres was forced off in the first half with hamstring discomfort, while Ian Maatsen later suffered an ankle problem.
The club have also lost Ezri Konsa following his move to Arsenal, leaving Emery with fewer established options in central defence.
Ramos could therefore offer Villa considerable experience if the proposed agreement is completed, although his arrival remains subject to the reported medical and the relevant registration requirements.
With the Premier League transfer window closed, Villa cannot make a standard signing at this stage. However, Ramos is a free agent, meaning a move may still be possible if the club have an available squad place and satisfy the league’s registration rules.
If the medical takes place as reported next week, Ramos could move closer to joining Aston Villa without the club having to wait until the January transfer window.
