Atlanta police are seeking the public’s help to identify a suspect accused of punching a man unconscious and robbing him on Baker Street in downtown Atlanta.
The attack happened at about 10.40pm on July 25 near Centennial Park, where the victim, who has been identified by the pseudonym Oscar, had been riding an e-scooter and writing music.
Investigators say the man struck Oscar in the face before leaving the area. He allegedly returned shortly afterwards and took a box of cigarettes and a box of alcohol from the unconscious victim.
Oscar said he has no memory of the assault. He recalled waking up in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital with tubes in his mouth.
“According to my police report, I was attacked, I was punched, and I was assaulted, so I can’t remember any of that,” he said.
The blow caused a traumatic brain injury and doctors were forced to carry out emergency surgery, according to Oscar. It was his second brain operation, following a craniotomy in 2023 during his recovery from stage four lung cancer and brain cancer.
Surveillance footage captured images of a person police believe may be connected to the robbery. Detectives have released photographs as they work to establish the suspect’s identity.
The person who called emergency services has not been identified. Oscar said he was grateful that help arrived after the attack.
“It sucks because I wish I could replay it like I’ve been trying, but I can’t,” he said. “Whoever called EMS on me, I thank God for them.”
Oscar said he would forgive the attacker if they came face to face in court, but insisted that the alleged assault should still be dealt with through the justice system.
“I will forgive him,” he said. “I’ll look him right in his eyes and forgive him. But at the same time, justice needs to be served.”
