An eight-month-old girl has died after being found unresponsive at a home in Redan, Victoria, with homicide detectives investigating the circumstances.
Emergency services performed CPR at the property in Leith Street at about 1pm on Sunday before the baby was taken to Ballarat Hospital. She was later transferred to a hospital in Melbourne, where she died on Tuesday.
Police have questioned a 23-year-old man, who was released pending further inquiries. Detectives from the Homicide Squad are continuing to investigate.
“The exact circumstances are yet to be determined and detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate,” a police spokesman said.
The baby had reportedly been living with foster parents before being returned to her biological parents.
Wendy Sturgess, chief executive of Child and Family Services, said the death had caused deep distress in the community.
“It impacts everybody who has been involved with the baby,” she said.
“(It’s) absolute sadness and disappointment that we are here — it doesn’t even sum it up.
“It’s our job to keep children safe, especially babies.”
