Barcelona have emerged as a serious contender to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, with reports claiming the Portugal international is considering a move away from Old Trafford in January.
Fernandes is said to have rejected United’s latest contract proposal amid frustration over the club’s direction. Turkish side Galatasaray are also preparing an ambitious approach, but Barcelona’s interest could alter the contest for his signature.
Barcelona monitor Bruno Fernandes situation
According to Fanatik, Fernandes has become increasingly unhappy at Manchester United and would like to leave during the January transfer window.
Galatasaray have previously shown strong interest and are working on another attempt to recruit the midfielder. Barcelona, however, are understood to be following developments closely.
The Spanish champions could offer Fernandes the opportunity to compete for major honours and play Champions League football. His creativity and goals from midfield would also provide an experienced addition to their squad.
United retain some control over the situation. Fernandes’ current contract expires next summer, although the club have an option to extend it by a further year.
Barcelona may prove more attractive than a move to Turkey for Fernandes, particularly with the player now 32 and potentially approaching the final major transfer of his career. A move to the Camp Nou would give him the chance to compete for La Liga and Champions League honours.
His influence remains central to the interest in him. Fernandes broke the Premier League assist record last season and won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, while continuing to be Manchester United’s most influential creative player despite the club’s struggles.
Portugal great Paulo Futre previously praised Fernandes, saying: “Bruno is a great person and a great player. He can decide a match.”
A January departure would leave United without their captain and principal creative force. If Fernandes has decided that his time at Old Trafford is over, Barcelona now appear to offer the most compelling alternative to Galatasaray.
