Arsenal defender Ben White has named Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as the toughest attacker he has faced in the Premier League, placing him ahead of a list that includes Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Son Heung-min.
White, who joined Arsenal from Brighton in a £50 million deal in 2021, was asked during an appearance on Men in Blazers to identify the most difficult opponent he had faced in England’s top flight.
“I’d probably still go with [Marcus] Rashford, I think he’s the toughest I’ve played against,” he replied.
Ben White singles out Marcus Rashford
The assessment represents a significant endorsement of Rashford, whose form and consistency have been questioned during a challenging period at Manchester United.
The forward spent last season on loan at Barcelona before returning to Old Trafford this summer. He has since featured regularly under manager Michael Carrick, starting United’s recent Premier League matches against Ipswich Town and Everton.
Rashford was withdrawn during the 2-2 draw at Everton on 6 September after feeling discomfort. Carrick said the decision was made for fitness reasons, with the player’s condition being monitored ahead of the Manchester derby against Manchester City on 13 September.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his availability, the 28-year-old has made a lively start to his return. His pace, movement and willingness to run behind defensive lines have once again offered United a direct threat, even though he is still waiting for his first Premier League goal of the campaign.
Those qualities are likely to have influenced White’s choice. Rashford’s explosive acceleration and ability to carry the ball at speed can force defenders into retreat, while a single mistake in positioning can leave him with a clear route towards goal.
White has faced many of the division’s leading forwards during his Arsenal career, but his answer suggests Rashford continues to command considerable respect among Premier League defenders.
The praise will also offer encouragement to a player attempting to establish himself again at Manchester United after an unsettled season. Carrick will now hope Rashford can maintain his fitness and turn his renewed influence into goals and assists as the campaign develops.
