Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s lead over Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has narrowed to a single percentage point in a new poll ahead of October’s presidential election.
The Quaest survey, commissioned by Globo, put Lula on 42 per cent in a simulated second-round contest, compared with 41 per cent for Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The result represents a shift from the previous Quaest poll, released on 14 August, when Lula held a 43 per cent to 40 per cent advantage over his right-wing rival.
Despite Lula’s numerical lead, the latest figures indicate a technical tie because of the poll’s margin of error. The contest is expected to remain closely fought as both campaigns seek to consolidate support before voting begins.
Flávio Bolsonaro has emerged as the leading candidate on the political right after his father was barred from standing again. Lula, who returned to the presidency in 2023, is seeking another term in office.
