Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele begins his second season as California’s starting quarterback under intense national scrutiny, with the Golden Bears’ sophomore signal-caller widely regarded as one of the most promising returning players in college football.
The 20-year-old made an immediate impression during his freshman campaign, becoming only the second true freshman to start a season opener for Cal after Jared Goff. He went on to start all 13 games in 2025, throwing for 3,454 yards and 18 touchdowns.
ACC Network analyst Max Browne has gone further, describing Sagapolutele as the best returning quarterback in the country. Browne praised his arm strength, accuracy and ability to deliver passes with anticipation, while also highlighting his poise and leadership.
Sagapolutele’s return has helped fuel renewed optimism in Berkeley as Cal enters a new era under head coach Tosh Lupoi. The Golden Bears have also strengthened their squad through the transfer portal, adding experienced options around their young quarterback.
Cal’s official roster lists Sagapolutele at 6ft 3in and 225lb. He has also been named to the 2026 watch lists for the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award and the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year honour.
The pressure will increase when the Golden Bears open their campaign against UCLA. Sagapolutele’s performance will be central to expectations surrounding a team hoping to build on a breakout first season from its quarterback and make progress in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
