Manchester United have fined Lisandro Martinez over comments he made after the Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid, according to BBC Sport.
The Argentina defender criticised sporting director Jason Wilcox during a post-match interview and has since apologised for the outburst. Manager Michael Carrick is due to speak to the press later on Friday.
Lisandro Martinez apologises for Manchester United outburst
Martinez said he had met with the club’s leadership and Carrick to discuss the incident, describing the conversation as positive and open.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity,” Martinez said in a statement.
“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.”
The 28-year-old is understood to accept that he made a mistake in the way he handled his frustration. The punishment is reportedly a fine.
Martinez’s criticism is said to reflect concerns shared by other members of the Manchester United squad, with discontent at Old Trafford described as having grown over a period of time.
However, the defender will now be expected to put the episode behind him and improve his performances on the pitch. His criticism of the club’s board has been acknowledged, but he has also been accused of producing some lacklustre displays himself.
