Liverpool’s hopes of re-signing Jarell Quansah could be complicated by the defender’s reported reluctance to return to Anfield. The 23-year-old is said to have reservations after struggling for regular first-team football during his previous spell with the club.
Liverpool retain a £59.5 million buy-back clause for the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back, but that advantage may count for little if Quansah does not want to come back. A report has claimed that his experience on Merseyside could influence his decision.
Jarell Quansah wants assurances over his role
Quansah made only four Premier League starts during the 2024-25 campaign before leaving Liverpool in 2025. Since moving to Germany, he has benefited from more consistent opportunities and has continued to develop as a defender.
That progress has strengthened his position, while also making a return to Liverpool less straightforward. Quansah is understood to want regular football as he builds his reputation and may be wary of entering another situation in which his place in the starting side is uncertain.
Liverpool continue to monitor the England international and could use defensive reinforcements, with Quansah viewed as a long-term option familiar with the club. However, they may need to offer clear assurances over his role if they are to persuade him that a reunion is the right move.
The defender is also attracting interest elsewhere. Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid have emerged as potential suitors, with Arsenal reportedly showing interest during the summer and Chelsea tracking his development.
Liverpool’s buy-back clause is due to expire in June 2027, leaving the club with an important decision over whether to act before that opportunity disappears. Competition for Quansah’s signature could increase if he continues to progress in Germany.
For now, his future remains unresolved. Liverpool have a contractual route to bring back their former academy graduate, but Quansah’s own preference could determine whether that option leads to a return to Anfield.
