Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea appointment was not his preferred outcome this summer, with the Spanish manager saying his move to Stamford Bridge came down to “timings” rather than a clear desire to join the club.
Alonso had emerged as a leading figure after transforming Bayer Leverkusen, while Liverpool appeared to be a possible destination as Arne Slot’s second season reportedly left an opening at Anfield. The former Liverpool midfielder ultimately joined Chelsea instead.
His comments to BBC Sport followed reports from ESPN that he had sought assurances before accepting the Chelsea job. Spanish publication AS also reported that Liverpool remained Alonso’s dream destination.
Why the Xabi Alonso Chelsea job already looks difficult
The early signs at Stamford Bridge have done little to suggest that Alonso has found a natural fit. Chelsea began the campaign with victories over Fulham and Brighton, but conceded five goals across those two matches.
They have since gone five league games without a win. A 3-0 defeat at Brentford left Chelsea with 12 goals conceded in five matches, the worst defensive record in the top flight at that stage.
Alonso’s decision to introduce 16-year-old midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli has been interpreted as a possible indication that he does not have the squad he wanted. The teenager’s involvement may also reflect the manager’s desire for greater options as he attempts to reshape the team.
That situation appears at odds with Alonso’s reputation as a project-focused coach. He enjoyed considerable success at Bayer Leverkusen in an environment regarded as patient and well organised, but Chelsea’s model has been presented as the opposite: a club that has invested heavily while demanding quick progress.
Will Chelsea give Alonso time?
The club have continued to spend, including on more established players such as Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix. However, the difficult start has raised questions about how long Alonso will be given to impose his tactical ideas and develop the squad.
Chelsea have previously shown a willingness to dismiss managers early in difficult spells. That could leave Alonso facing an especially demanding task, having apparently been uncertain about the move even before taking charge.
If the relationship proves unsuitable, an early separation could ultimately be considered preferable to allowing the situation to deteriorate further.
