Cillian Murphy’s son Aran Murphy has landed a role in HBO’s new drama Youth – and his appearance at the London screening prompted widespread comparisons with his famous father.
The 19-year-old actor plays Ruairi, a troubled teenager who becomes emotionally unrav and is easily drawn into questionable social media trends.
Aran joined co-stars including Sharon Horgan, Rupert Friend and Robbie Gee on the red carpet on Friday ahead of a screening of the series.
Images from the event circulated on social media, with viewers struck by his resemblance to the Oscar-winning Irish actor.
Comments included: “Literally copy and paste Cillian to a T!!!”, “He is more Cillian than Cillian himself” and “I thought that was young him.” Another user wrote: “No DNA test needed with this one.”
Aran Murphy’s growing acting career
Aran has already appeared in a number of film and television projects. Earlier this year, he featured alongside Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams in director Taika Waititi’s science-fiction adaptation Klara and the Sun.
He also joined the cast of WAR, an HBO and Sky co-production featuring Dominic West and Sienna Miller, last year.
His feature film debut came in 2022, when he appeared in Andrew Legge’s independent science-fiction mystery Lola.
Aran’s resemblance to his father was also noted by Taylor Swift when she spotted him in the audience during an episode of The Graham Norton Show last year.
Cillian recalled meeting Swift at an Oscars party with his family, telling the programme: “We were at a party and I had the whole gang and my family, and my kids. I don’t think my kids were legally allowed to be there.”
Swift replied: “I don’t know but they were delightful. Your sons are the future of our world. They were such great conversationalists they were interesting and interested, that’s a real accomplishment.”
When actress Greta Lee asked whether Aran was in the studio, Cillian said one of his sons was there. Swift then recognised him in the audience and said: “Oh he’s right there, you can tell!”
Host Graham Norton added: “Oh my god he is so Cillian Murphy style. If this was a game show we’ve all just won a prize.”
Aran’s older brother Malachy, 20, has shown an interest in music, while Cillian and his family now live in Dublin. The actor has previously said his sons were born in London and that the family moved back to Ireland in 2015.
