A Michigan man has been convicted for a second time over the 2013 murders of a mother and her 11-year-old daughter in Clinton Township, Macomb County.
Henry Johnson, 41, was found guilty by a jury of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder and two counts of felony murder in connection with the deaths of Tina Geiger, 36, and Kristine Geiger.
The killings took place in the victims’ apartment on 24 July 2013. Prosecutors said Kristine was sexually assaulted before she and her mother were stabbed to death.
Cold-case evidence linked brothers to murders
The investigation remained unresolved for years before it was reopened in 2019. A bloody palm print and DNA recovered from the crime scene and from Kristine were linked to Johnson’s brother, Tony.
Investigators also identified Henry Johnson through evidence from the apartment complex and surveillance footage showing him at a nearby convenience store at the same time as the victims on the day of the killings. Prosecutors said the brothers had walked Tina and Kristine home.
Henry and Tony Johnson were convicted of the murders in 2022. Henry later secured a new trial after an appeal in which he argued that he had received ineffective legal representation. Tony Johnson remains in prison.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J Lucido said the verdict brought justice to the victims’ families, while acknowledging that the killings had caused lasting pain.
“More than 13 years have passed, but the pain caused by these heartless and brutal murders will never leave the family of Ms Geiger and her precious daughter,” he said.
Henry Johnson was tried between 22 and 30 September. He is due to be sentenced on 2 December, with the murder convictions carrying a mandatory life sentence in prison.
