Text messages sent two days after an alleged sexual assault appear to show Jane Doe defending a sexual encounter involving Jonathan Newell and Matthew Ingalls, while saying there was “nothing” to feel ashamed about.
In an exchange dated October 21, 2024, Newell apologised to Doe and said he hoped she was not facing as much criticism as the men involved. He wrote: “You’re an amazing person and I genuinely hope ur not catching as much heat from this as we r. We’ve been shutting down any stories we’ve heard but again I’m so so sorry.”
Doe replied that her memory was unclear, adding: “aw jonathan i really appreciate this text. my memories super clouded too. I think we were all way to f***ing drunk and high.”
She then said she had enjoyed being with Newell and Ingalls and that other people had no say over what she referred to as “the gamgbang”.
“i don’t think we should feel any shame for the part. our body our choice asf,” Doe wrote.
The messages also refer to a fourth person being present, beyond what Doe described as an encounter involving herself, Newell and Ingalls. She wrote that Newell and Ingalls had been “super out of it” and that the other people present “should have taken it on themselves to leave”.
Doe added: “at the end of the day you, matt, and i were in your bed and they didn’t need to get up in that.”
In a further message, she appeared to refer to having previously been intimate with Newell and Ingalls together, writing: “i really do love u and matt and i promise i wont get quiet and weird w u like i did last time.”
The exchange was sent after the alleged sexual assault and before Doe would later accuse one of the men of rape.
