Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will be sidelined for an unspecified period after being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot, with the team placing him on injured reserve.
The move means Hurts must miss at least four weeks. With Philadelphia having a bye in Week 10, he will next be eligible to return against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11.
The Eagles believe the clot is treatable. Blood-thinning medication is often prescribed for blood clots, although NFL players cannot play while taking the medication.
Hurts’ absence comes as Philadelphia has made a difficult start to the season, winning two of its first five games. The team is also dealing with injuries to running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
Hurts has thrown for 933 yards and eight touchdowns this season. The Eagles are due to face the Carolina Panthers in Philadelphia on Sunday, with backup quarterback Tanner McKee set to take charge of the offence.
