Ed Sheeran apologised to fans during an emotional Philadelphia concert after Macklemore was removed from the tour amid controversy over the rapper’s pro-Palestinian comments.
Sheeran became tearful as he addressed the dispute on stage, saying he was personally “appalled” by the conflict between Israel and Palestine and had been “so, so sorry” for making mistakes.
He told the audience he had not wanted to disappoint fans or become an activist musician, but had found himself at the centre of an argument about freedom of speech and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“My concerts have always been a safe space for everyone, and that matters hugely to me,” he said. “Honoring my commitment to my fans is also completely essential to who I am, and that is why I’m here tonight on my own and continuing my current tour.”
Sheeran described the October 7 attack on Israel as “catastrophic”, while calling Israel’s response “unjustifiable” and “disproportionate”.
The Philadelphia show was the first since Macklemore’s departure from the tour following controversy over his “Free Palestine” remarks. The other opening acts reportedly quit in solidarity, leaving Sheeran as the only performer.
Macklemore has alleged that NFL owner Robert Kraft objected to his comments and pressured Sheeran to remove him from the tour. Sheeran said he did not make the final decision, while Kraft allegedly warned that Macklemore performing at his stadium would cross a line.
Other NFL owners were also said to have opposed Macklemore’s involvement before he was removed from the tour.
The concert faced the prospect of protests from the Philly Palestine Coalition, a major pro-Palestinian group that announced plans to attend. A Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson said appropriate measures had been taken to protect people attending the event.
Some ticket holders had sought refunds for the show, but reportedly found the process difficult. Reselling tickets also proved challenging.
