A former Clarke County jail officer has been arrested in Georgia after an internal investigation into alleged professional misconduct, authorities said.
Derwin Johnson, who previously worked as a detention officer with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested on a charge of violating his oath of office.
Officials said he also faces pending charges under Georgia law connected to the alleged provision of unauthorised items to an inmate. The items could include weapons, alcohol, drugs or telecommunications devices, although the sheriff’s office has not specified what Johnson is accused of supplying.
The investigation was carried out by the sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards, which handles serious allegations of misconduct involving members of the department.
Johnson was due to be taken to Barrow County Jail, according to authorities. The investigation remains ongoing.
Sheriff John Q. Williams said the department expected its staff to meet the “highest standards of integrity, professionalism and ethical conduct”.
He added that any conduct which undermined public trust or threatened the safety and security of the community would be investigated, with criminal charges brought where the evidence justified them.
