Jaquoya Wixx was fatally stabbed multiple times in downtown Detroit on Sunday afternoon, prompting her sister Alicya Wixx to speak publicly about the attack just hours later.
The incident happened at about 2.30pm on September 20 in an alley near the 600 block of Woodward Avenue, according to Detroit police. Wixx was reportedly on a break from work at a nearby business when she was approached by a man and stabbed.
Police said she ran towards a nearby business before collapsing outside. Emergency crews took her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A man in his 40s was arrested near Woodward Avenue and State Street shortly afterwards. Investigators used surveillance cameras to help locate him after he fled the scene, police said.
A downtown worker reportedly saw the man carrying a weapon and chased him before officers arrived. Police said the knife believed to have been used in the attack had been recovered and was being examined.
Investigators were working to establish what led to the stabbing. They said there appeared to have been little interaction between the suspect and Wixx before the attack and had not confirmed whether they knew each other.
