A 32-year-old US Postal Service worker has been identified by his family as the man who was fatally shot outside the Vallejo apartment complex where he lived with relatives.
Devaughn McBride was shot shortly before 8.30am on Tuesday, 6 October, on the 200 block of Marin Street near Curtola Parkway, according to police. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.
Family members said McBride had recently become a permanent employee with the postal service and was wearing his work uniform at the time of the shooting.
They said he had left the building to visit a nearby shop for a drink and snacks before starting work. Relatives were told that a person in a vehicle opened fire, although police have not publicly confirmed details about the suspected attacker.
Witnesses reported hearing two shots. A neighbour told local media that a first responder had attempted to revive McBride at the scene.
The Vallejo Police Department said the shooting was one of several serious incidents reported in the city within about 20 minutes that morning. A man critically injured in a separate shooting was found near Springs Road and Castlewood Drive, while another person died in a nearby crash.
Police have not confirmed whether the two shootings were connected. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of McBride’s death and identify a possible motive.
McBride’s family said they could not understand why he would have been targeted. They suspect he may have been mistaken for someone else, but that claim has not been established by investigators.
Relatives said McBride, who was known locally as “Buddha”, lived with his mother and younger brother and leaves behind a 12-year-old son. A memorial has since been placed near the scene of the shooting.
