The Hayden Panettiere death investigation is examining whether she unknowingly took an oxycodone tablet containing fentanyl, according to reports citing law enforcement sources familiar with the case.
The actress, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on 16 August aged 36 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
Fentanyl-laced pill theory remains unconfirmed
Investigators reportedly believe Ms Panettiere may have taken the tablet on the morning of her death. The theory has not been confirmed, however, with toxicology results still outstanding.
It has been alleged that she obtained oxycodone and other prescription drugs on the black market from a long-time dealer in Los Angeles before travelling to South Carolina. She reportedly took several of the drugs during her flight from Los Angeles the previous day.
Authorities are now investigating whether an oxycodone pill taken the following morning was contaminated with fentanyl. The toxicology findings are expected to help determine whether that account is accurate and whether it can be established as the cause of death.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Los Angeles office is also examining Ms Panettiere’s alleged connection to the dealer and trying to establish where the tablet came from.
South Carolina authorities and federal investigators in Los Angeles have been pursuing leads as the investigation continues. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, has reportedly met DEA officials, while other people have also been interviewed.
Mr Hickerson was with Ms Panettiere when she became unresponsive and is reported to have administered Narcan before paramedics arrived.
An autopsy has been completed, with the coroner previously confirming that there were no signs of trauma contributing to her death. Her official cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation.
