FIFA will present a review of its withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal to the organisation’s Council, following criticism over the lack of answers surrounding the abandoned investment plan.
The proposal, launched by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, involved selling commercial stakes in the World Cup and other FIFA events to outside investors. It was withdrawn after triggering opposition across world football.
Denmark’s football chief, Jesper Moller, last week questioned why FIFA had declined to address what he called “critical questions” at a meeting of the governing body’s Legal Committee.
In a statement, FIFA said its standing committees advise and assist the Council in their respective areas under the organisation’s statutes and governance regulations. It added: “As previously communicated, a review of the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal will be presented to the FIFA Council.”
The Council has 37 members, including Infantino, eight vice-presidents and 28 representatives elected by FIFA’s member associations.
The investment plan prompted a broad backlash, with UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF among those calling for changes to FIFA’s leadership structure. A possible no-confidence vote against Infantino was also discussed.
Several European national associations have since withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election bid. Greek Football Association president Makis Gagatsis and former Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff joined UEFA’s push for change in FIFA’s leadership on Tuesday.
However, people familiar with the discussions said Infantino still had enough backing to secure another term, leaving opponents focused on attempts to limit his powers.
The FIFA presidential election is due to take place in Rabat on 18 March 2027, when Infantino is expected to seek a fourth term.
