A Sarasota County man is accused of opening fire on deputies after allegedly brandishing a gun during an altercation at a McDonald’s drive-through in Florida.
Casey King, 39, was shot and seriously wounded during the confrontation at his home on Hoyer Drive in Sarasota early on Sunday. He is in a critical but stable condition at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Sarasota County shooting follows McDonald’s incident
The incident began at about 12.19am when deputies were called to the McDonald’s car park at the junction of Bee Ridge Road and Cattlemen Road.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said no one was injured at the restaurant. Investigators allege that Mr King pulled out a gun and pointed it at people at the scene before leaving.
Deputies used part of the vehicle’s number plate to identify and trace it to Mr King’s home, arriving there about 20 minutes later. The vehicle was found in the driveway at 4818 Hoyer Drive.
Officers surrounded the property and repeatedly ordered Mr King to come outside. His parents were inside the house and, according to the sheriff’s office, his mother called 911 after seeing him with a rifle.
The sheriff’s office said Mr King then opened fire through the front door towards deputies. One deputy returned fire, striking him several times in the hand, chest and hip or upper-leg area.
No deputies were injured, and Mr King was taken into custody before being transported to hospital.
He is expected to face five counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer. Additional charges are anticipated in connection with the shooting at the McDonald’s car park.
Investigators have not yet established what led to the original dispute at the drive-through. The case remains under investigation.
