Dense fog is expected to disrupt the Monday morning commute across Washington DC and nearby parts of Maryland and Virginia before giving way to sunshine and mild, breezy conditions later in the day.
The National Weather Service said visibility could fall to a quarter of a mile or less in places during the morning, with motorists urged to allow extra time and take care on the roads.
The fog is forecast to lift by around 8am, although cloud may linger through the middle of the morning. Temperatures will then rise to about 73F (23C), with north-westerly winds strengthening and gusts reaching up to 25mph.
The changeable start follows Sunday’s cooler conditions, when temperatures remained in the 60s. Monday night is expected to be clear, with temperatures falling to about 46F (8C).
Tuesday will bring a cooler start and a high of around 66F (19C), while sunny conditions are forecast to continue through Wednesday, when temperatures should climb back into the low 70s.
Further warming is expected on Thursday and Friday, with highs of about 78F (26C) and 75F (24C) respectively. The next meaningful chance of rain is forecast for Sunday, leaving much of the weekend dry.
