More than 500 paediatric cancer patients, survivors, relatives and carers were given a break from treatment at a special day hosted by the San Francisco Giants and UCSF Health at Oracle Park.
The event, held on Sunday 13 September, brought families to the Giants’ ballpark for baseball, activities and time away from hospital routines. It formed part of the Giants’ annual Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day, presented by UCSF Health.
The Giants said the programme was designed to honour children and families affected by cancer while raising awareness of the support available to them. Patients, relatives and oncology staff from more than a dozen hospitals and non-profit organisations were invited to take part.
Activities included on-field recognition and displays celebrating young people who have faced cancer. The Giants also featured their Pediatric Cancer Player Portraits on the stadium scoreboard.
UCSF Health is the official healthcare partner of the Giants, with the two San Francisco institutions working together on community programmes as well as medical services for the team, its staff and visitors to Oracle Park.
The Giants’ wider paediatric cancer work includes the BP28 initiative, established by former player Buster Posey and his wife, Kristen. The organisation says the initiative has raised more than $7 million for research and treatment through partnerships including UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and the V Foundation.
