An 11-year-old girl has died and her mother has been seriously injured in a head-on crash in Moana, in Adelaide’s south.
Emergency services were called to Commercial Road at about 7pm on Tuesday after a Subaru collided with a Nissan Pulsar. The girl was trapped in the Pulsar with her 35-year-old mother, from Christie Downs.
Residents said the impact was heard from inside their homes. Ann Learwood described it as “like a bomb going off”, while Stacey Taylor said it was loud enough to make her think something had struck her house.
The 37-year-old Seaford Meadows man driving the Subaru suffered minor injuries. Witnesses said he got out of his vehicle immediately and tried to help the mother and daughter.
“He ran out and just went to try and open the door,” Ms Learwood said.
Retired trauma nurse Deb was among those who went to assist. She found the girl unresponsive but still showing signs of life, but the child died at the scene despite efforts by residents and emergency crews.
Firefighters used the jaws of life to free the girl’s mother from the wreckage. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Major Crash investigators remained at the scene late into the night as they worked to establish what caused the collision.
Police are appealing for witnesses who saw either vehicle travelling along Commercial Road before the crash, as well as anyone with dashcam footage, to come forward.
