DC’s upcoming superhero ensemble series Legends of Tomorrow has confirmed that Hawkman will appear in every single episode of the show, putting to rest earlier suggestions that the winged hero would only feature as a guest character.
Executive producer Phil Klemmer confirmed the news, revealing that actor Falk Hentschel will be a series regular throughout the run and will also appear in crossover episodes with both The Flash and Arrow. The character is expected to feature prominently alongside Hawkgirl, played by Ciara Renee, with the two forming one of the show’s central relationships.
Klemmer addressed concerns that Hawkman’s expanded role might overshadow Hawkgirl, explaining that the dynamic between the two characters has been carefully constructed to avoid that outcome. He described their relationship as drawing inspiration from the classic on-screen chemistry of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, noting that while Hawkman retains memories of the pair’s previous reincarnated lives together, Hawkgirl does not — a detail that creates an inherent tension between them.
The producer also confirmed that the two characters will clash regularly throughout the series, taking cues from Geoff Johns’ Hawkman comic run and the JSA series. Romance will not be the central focus of their storyline, with the show deliberately steering away from sentimentality in how it handles the pairing.
The full main cast now stands at ten heroes, comprising Firestorm, The Atom, White Canary, Rip Hunter, Hawkgirl, Jay Jackson, Heat Wave, Captain Cold and Hawkman. Primary villain Vandal Savage, played by Casper Crump, will also feature, while The Flash and Arrow stars Grant Gustin and Stephen Amell are set to make guest appearances rather than join the regular lineup.
Klemmer assured fans that despite the size of the ensemble, all ten main characters will feature in every episode rather than rotating in and out of individual storylines.
Legends of Tomorrow is expected to premiere on The CW in January, though the storyline will be introduced through tie-in episodes of The Flash and Arrow airing in late 2015.
