Southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas, will close overnight on Friday, September 18, as crews carry out work on the elevated managed lanes being built as part of the Capital Express South project.
The closure will run from 11pm between Stassney Lane and Slaughter Lane, with the road expected to reopen by 9am on Saturday, September 19. Drivers have been warned to allow extra time for their journeys and follow temporary signs.
Traffic will be diverted via the William Cannon Drive exit, numbered 228. Motorists should continue along the southbound frontage road before rejoining I-35 at the next available entrance ramp.
The Texas Department of Transportation, known as TxDOT, said the restriction was needed to allow construction work to be carried out safely and efficiently. Drivers have been urged to remain alert as they pass through the work zone.
Capital Express South project
The $548 million scheme is designed to improve traffic flow along I-35 between SH 71, also known as Ben White Boulevard, and SH 45 Southeast.
It will add two non-tolled managed lanes in each direction, including an elevated section between Ben White Boulevard and Slaughter Lane. A new southbound bypass lane will also allow vehicles to avoid the Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive intersections.
The wider project includes reconstructed entrance and exit ramps, improvements to bridges and east-west connections, and roughly 13 miles of shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work began in November 2022 and is being delivered in four phases. TxDOT expects construction to be completed in late 2028, subject to weather conditions.
