Independent MP Helen Haines has been injured after being struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria.
The 65-year-old federal member for Indi was reportedly unloading items from the boot of a car in a parking bay on Murphy Street when she was hit by a 4WD.
Reports said Ms Haines suffered severe lower-body injuries in the incident, which occurred at about 4pm.
Her family said she was receiving medical care and thanked bystanders, health workers and police who responded.
“Our family, and Helen’s staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media,” the family said.
“Please keep Helen in your thoughts.”
Ms Haines was elected to Federal Parliament in 2019, succeeding fellow independent Cathy McGowan. She was re-elected at the 2022 and 2025 elections.
She has lived in north-east Victoria for almost 40 years, where she and her husband run a small farm. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse, midwife and health researcher.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke were due to address the media at 7pm.
