Israel forward Sayed Abu Farchi was sent off for a gun-style goal celebration during his side’s 3-1 Nations League defeat by Austria in Linz.
Abu Farchi had equalised in the 55th minute, heading in to cancel out Romano Schmid’s first-half penalty at the Raiffeisen Arena.
The 20-year-old then ran to the corner, removed the flag and dropped to one knee. He rested the pole on the back of his hand before making a firing gesture.
The referee showed the Colorado Rapids player a second yellow card, just four minutes after his first, leaving Israel with 10 men.
It was not immediately clear whether Abu Farchi intended to imitate a pool cue shot or a weapon, but the gesture prompted the dismissal.
International football’s Law 12 permits players to celebrate goals, although celebrations must not be excessive. Players can also be cautioned for acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory manner.
Austria restored their lead in the 90th minute through Phillipp Mwene, who scored from a cross by Paul Wanner. Sasa Kalajdzic added a third in stoppage time with a close-range finish.
