Liverpool are tracking PSV Eindhoven midfielder Paul Wanner as they assess options for the next stage of their midfield rebuild, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also reported to be monitoring the 20-year-old.
Wanner, an Austria international, has emerged as one of the promising young midfielders in the Netherlands since moving to PSV permanently in 2025. His potential availability could lead to a contest between three of European football’s biggest clubs.
Liverpool tracking Paul Wanner amid competition
PSV are understood to value Wanner at between €45 million and €50 million, equivalent to roughly £38.5 million to £42.85 million. Any deal would therefore represent a significant investment in a player who is still developing.
Bayern may hold an advantage in the race. Wanner came through the German club’s academy, became their youngest senior player when he made his debut at 16 years and 15 days, and is reportedly covered by an option that could allow Bayern to bring him back.
He subsequently spent time on loan with Elversberg and Heidenheim before joining PSV on a permanent basis. His progress has continued in Eindhoven, where he made 22 Eredivisie appearances last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Wanner has already featured in each of PSV’s six league matches this term, underlining his growing importance to the Dutch side.
Why Paul Wanner appeals to Liverpool
Liverpool’s interest reflects the need to maintain depth in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch remain central to the squad, but Curtis Jones’ departure has reduced the available options.
Trey Nyoni is regarded as a highly rated youngster coming through, while Wanner would offer another technically gifted alternative with scope to develop over the longer term.
Although primarily an attacking midfielder, Wanner can also operate in wider areas. He is left-footed, comfortable in tight spaces and capable of creating opportunities between the lines.
Real Madrid would offer the attraction of joining one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, while Bayern’s familiarity with the player and reported contractual advantage could complicate Liverpool’s pursuit. The Reds may need to demonstrate that Anfield provides the clearest route to regular first-team football.
At around £43 million, Wanner would not be a low-cost gamble, but his age and versatility fit Liverpool’s reported preference for investing in players who can contribute while still possessing considerable room for improvement.
