Liverpool are considering whether to make Ronald Araujo’s loan move from Barcelona permanent, with a €55 million purchase option available at the end of the season.
The Uruguay international joined the Reds on a season-long deal in August and has quickly become part of Andoni Iraola’s plans. His early performances have reportedly encouraged the club to examine the possibility of retaining him beyond the current campaign.

Araujo has made seven appearances for Liverpool, starting five of those matches. The agreement gives Liverpool the choice to sign him permanently, rather than obliging them to meet the fee.
The 27-year-old’s versatility has been a major asset. While he is primarily a centre-back, Iraola has also used him at right-back, providing additional cover in an area where Liverpool have needed greater flexibility.
A report in Mundo Deportivo said Liverpool have been impressed by Araujo’s adaptation to the Premier League and by the physical qualities he has brought to the defence. His arrival has coincided with an encouraging start to the season, including a recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth.
Araujo is also understood to be open to remaining in England permanently. He has described his current spell as one of the strongest periods of his career, suggesting there could be an appetite on both sides for the temporary arrangement to continue.
The option gives Liverpool time to make a measured decision. The club can assess Araujo’s fitness, consistency and suitability over the remaining months before deciding whether to commit the €55m required to complete the transfer.
Questions had surrounded his injury record and his ability to adjust quickly to English football when the loan was agreed. His opening weeks at Anfield have answered some of those concerns, although Liverpool will continue to monitor his progress before reaching a final verdict.
Araujo’s ability to operate in two defensive positions could prove particularly valuable as Liverpool plan for the future of their back line. If he maintains his current level, allowing him to return to Barcelona without exercising the purchase option may become a more difficult decision.
