Liverpool are monitoring Tyler Morton’s progress at Lyon as Andoni Iraola considers adding another defensively minded midfielder to his squad ahead of the January transfer window.
Morton left Anfield for the French club in August 2025 after seeking regular first-team football, and his development has put him back on Liverpool’s radar.
The 22-year-old made 43 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring twice and providing three assists. He has also started four of Lyon’s first five Ligue 1 matches this term and has featured in European competition.

Football Insider reports that Liverpool are “keeping tabs” on Morton and regard him as one of several potential options for the number-six position.
No formal move has been made, however, and Lyon would be reluctant to lose a key midfielder midway through the season.
Morton made 14 senior appearances for Liverpool before moving to France in a deal worth about £15 million. The Reds did not negotiate a buy-back clause, although they retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
His contract with Lyon runs until 2030, giving the French club a strong negotiating position should Liverpool decide to pursue a return.
A move would offer Liverpool a player familiar with the club who has since gained substantial experience in Ligue 1. Morton’s regular involvement has also allowed him to develop into a more mature defensive midfielder.
However, the absence of a buy-back clause means Liverpool would have to negotiate on normal market terms. Lyon’s stance and Morton’s long contract could make a January deal considerably more expensive than the fee received for his departure.
A return is therefore likely to depend on whether Iraola believes Morton is ready to contribute immediately. If not, Liverpool may prefer to wait until the summer rather than pay a premium for a player they sold 18 months earlier.
