Manchester United are trying to persuade 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel to remain at the club after Chelsea joined Real Madrid and Barcelona in pursuing the highly rated teenager.
Gabriel has reportedly asked to leave Old Trafford, although United have not abandoned attempts to change his mind. The forward has been with the club since the age of 11 and scored 26 goals in 29 Under-18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup appearances last season.
Chelsea enter race for Manchester United prospect
Chelsea are understood to be the leading English club interested in Gabriel, while Real Madrid and Barcelona have held discussions over a possible move.
Real Madrid are also reported to be leading the wider race, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich among the other clubs monitoring the situation. Gabriel’s future has consequently become one of the most closely watched youth-transfer stories in Europe.
United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox are involved in efforts to find a solution, with Gabriel still registered as a Manchester United player.
A significant date is approaching, as Gabriel turns 16 on October 6. That could make a move to Spain more realistic, subject to FIFA regulations and the relevant safeguards.
United seek to convince Gabriel over first-team pathway
United regard Gabriel as one of the brightest talents in their academy and he was reportedly close to becoming involved with the senior side before seeking a departure.
His potential exit would raise questions over whether the club is doing enough to persuade its leading young players that they have a clear route into the first team.
United can point to their academy record, the Carrington development pathway and their willingness to give opportunities to young players. Chelsea’s interest, however, offers Gabriel the possibility of staying in England, while Real Madrid and Barcelona provide the attraction of two of Europe’s leading development environments.
The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as United attempt to present Gabriel with a convincing plan for his progression. If they fail to do so, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are positioned to pursue a deal for the teenager.
