Manchester United are in talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract as uncertainty grows over whether the captain will remain at Old Trafford beyond next summer.
Fernandes is approaching the end of his current agreement, although the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months. United are keen to resolve the situation rather than allow speculation over his future to continue.
The Portugal international’s form has dipped this season, with just one assist in all competitions after he broke the Premier League assist record with 21 last term. Michael Carrick has also suggested that Fernandes has been managing a minor injury, which may have contributed to his difficult start.
Man United talks with Bruno Fernandes continue
Despite the uncertainty, United continue to regard Fernandes as a highly important figure and have not ruled out keeping him beyond next summer. Negotiations over a possible new agreement are ongoing.
The club must weigh his recent performances against the wider value he has provided since joining. Fernandes has carried much of United’s creative responsibility in recent years and was voted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year last season.
His leadership has also been viewed as a significant asset. When Fernandes joined from Sporting, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised his leadership qualities and his ability to contribute goals and assists.
United are already facing instability around Carrick and several senior players, making Fernandes’ position another important issue for the club. His departure would create a substantial gap in the squad, even though his age means there may eventually be a case for moving on.
For now, United appear intent on retaining control of the situation by pursuing a new deal, unless Fernandes himself pushes for an exit.
