Manchester United are reportedly tracking Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub as they continue to pursue emerging young talent in Europe.
The 16-year-old forward has made a rapid impression in France and has already appeared at senior level, attracting attention despite his age. United’s interest comes as uncertainty continues over the future of academy prospect JJ Gabriel.
Manchester United tracking Mezian Mesloub amid JJ Gabriel uncertainty
United’s scouting department has identified Mesloub as a player to monitor closely. The club are also attempting to persuade Gabriel to remain at Old Trafford after he requested to leave earlier this month.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox are reportedly involved in efforts to resolve the situation surrounding Gabriel.
Mesloub’s progress has accelerated in recent months. He made his Champions League debut this season and provided an assist during Lens’ 3-2 victory over Slavia Prague.
In a 29-minute appearance, UEFA statistics recorded that Mesloub attempted two shots, completed 87 per cent of his passes and reached a top speed of 29.57km/h.
His breakthrough began last season when he scored just five seconds after coming on against Nantes, securing a 1-0 victory for Lens.
That appearance also saw Mesloub become the third-youngest player from a French club to feature in the Champions League, behind Rayan Cherki and Warren Zaïre-Emery. He was 16 years and 306 days old at the time.
The teenager has also received international recognition, reportedly earning a place in Portugal’s Under-21 squad despite being only 16. He had previously represented Portugal at Under-16 and Under-17 level.
United continue to plan for the future
Mesloub’s potential appeal to United extends beyond the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel. His profile fits the club’s reported preference for signing technically gifted teenagers who can develop before reaching their full potential.
However, his age means any move would require patience and careful management. United’s interest is understood to be part of a broader effort to build a pipeline of elite young players, rather than simply finding a direct replacement for Gabriel.
If Mesloub’s progress continues, competition for his signature is likely to grow. United’s reported interest suggests they are keen to assess the Lens forward before he becomes more widely established.
