JJ Gabriel has asked to leave Manchester United, dealing a significant blow to the club’s academy programme and prompting interest from Manchester City and several leading European clubs.
The 15-year-old forward has formally requested the cancellation of his registration with immediate effect after becoming frustrated by the latest developments surrounding his first-team prospects.
Gabriel was left out of United’s senior squad for their Champions League meeting with Azerbaijani side Sabah. He had also been expected to feature in the League Cup third-round squad against Brighton, where he could have become the youngest player in the club’s history.
However, the teenager has not trained with the first team for the past fortnight, leaving his future at Old Trafford uncertain.
Manchester City monitoring JJ Gabriel situation
Gabriel’s youth contract runs until the end of the season, but he has now asked to be deregistered before it expires. He cannot simply leave immediately as a free agent, with United’s senior figures seeking to repair their relationship with the player and his representatives.
If an agreement cannot be reached, United are expected to seek significant compensation for the forward’s development. There is also reported financial interest in Gabriel, with agencies looking to represent him ahead of a potential transfer battle.
Manchester City are among the clubs monitoring the situation and represent United’s most pressing concern because of the teenager’s potential availability and the rivalry between the two Manchester sides.
Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also understood to be following developments. Barcelona have made a particularly concerted attempt to attract Gabriel, who spent part of the summer in Catalonia, while Real Madrid and Chelsea continue to assess the possibility of signing him.
JJ Gabriel’s rise through the Manchester United academy
Gabriel has continued to produce impressive figures despite the uncertainty surrounding his future. He has scored five goals in three appearances for United’s Under-19 and Under-21 sides.
Regarded as one of the brightest young talents in English football, Gabriel was dubbed “Kid Messi” after a viral video highlighted his close control, dribbling and flair. He can operate as either a left winger or a central forward.
He made his Under-18 debut at the age of 14 and scored twice against Leeds United. He was also named the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season for 2025–26.
Gabriel became United’s youngest scorer in the UEFA Youth League when he struck a hat-trick in a 5–0 victory over Sabah. In August 2026, he also became the youngest player to feature in an unofficial senior match for the club, appearing in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid aged 15.
United will now attempt to find a solution with Gabriel and his representatives before one of their most highly rated academy prospects is lost to a domestic or European rival.
