Manchester United’s interest in Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde has been revived by uncertainty over his place in the Catalan club’s side, although a January move is far from straightforward.
The 22-year-old is understood to have fallen down the pecking order following João Cancelo’s arrival and the emergence of Xavi Espart. That has created a potential opening for United, who continue to assess their long-term options at left-back.

Mundo Deportivo has reported that Balde could leave Barcelona during the January transfer window. However, interest from Manchester United predates the latest speculation over his future.
Football España reported earlier this month that United were preparing to discuss the defender’s situation with Barcelona and his representatives. Concerns over Luke Shaw’s ability to cope with a heavy schedule were among the reasons for the club’s interest.
Balde’s position was also monitored during the summer, when he was said to have become increasingly open to leaving after his route to regular first-team football narrowed. United were regarded as one of his strongest options, although the club was understood to favour a loan rather than an immediate permanent transfer.
That distinction could prove important in January. Barcelona are believed to prefer a permanent sale if they decide to part with Balde, while United may be reluctant to commit to a substantial fee in the middle of the season.
The Spanish club is under no immediate pressure to sell, with Balde contracted until 2028. Despite his reduced playing time, he remains highly regarded, which is likely to strengthen Barcelona’s negotiating position.
United must weigh Balde deal against wider rebuild
From United’s perspective, Balde would offer pace, recovery speed and the ability to carry the ball forward. His profile could provide a more attacking option on the left, particularly when the team wants its full-backs to operate higher up the pitch.
The need for greater depth in that position has been highlighted by United’s inconsistent start, with weaknesses in the full-back areas adding to concerns elsewhere in the squad.
United are therefore expected to remain alert to developments, but the terms of any agreement will be central to their decision. A loan deal with an option to buy would provide a route into the move, whereas a sizeable permanent fee could make waiting until the summer more attractive.
Balde remains a player United are encouraged to pursue, but only if Barcelona’s demands fit the club’s broader rebuilding plans.
