Lisandro Martinez reportedly wants to leave Manchester United, with the Argentina international indicating that he does not currently see his long-term future at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old is approaching the final year of his contract, although United have the option to extend his deal for a further 12 months. That decision has yet to be made as uncertainty grows over the defender’s future.
Lisandro Martinez’s Manchester United future remains uncertain
Martinez’s position has become more complicated since he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy following the Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.
The centre-back questioned United’s summer recruitment and technical director Jason Wilcox’s work after the 2-0 loss in Madrid. He later said his comments had been made out of frustration, while Michael Carrick maintained that the issue had been dealt with internally.
Despite those assurances, it remains unclear whether Martinez or Manchester United believe the relationship can continue beyond his current agreement. If he remains determined to leave, next summer could represent the most practical opportunity for both parties to part company.
United would still be losing a defender with valuable qualities if Martinez departs. His recent remarks have created controversy, but his ability when fully fit has also been recognised during his time at the club.
Former United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger previously praised Martinez’s qualities, saying: “He is South American, he has that passion!”
Schweinsteiger also described him as “a very smart player”, arguing that his intelligence enables him to excel at centre-back despite lacking the height traditionally associated with the position.
Martinez’s aggression and reading of the game remain useful attributes for United, who are already expected to strengthen their defence. However, retaining an unhappy player solely because of his reputation may not be considered worthwhile.
Activating the additional year of Martinez’s contract before negotiating a summer transfer could at least protect United from losing an experienced Argentina international for nothing.
