Melbourne Victory reached the Australia Cup final after beating Sydney FC 2-0 in a fiercely contested Big Blue semi-final at Jubilee Stadium.
The victory secured the A-League Men club a place in the decider, where they will face either South Melbourne or Lions FC on October 10.
Victory controlled the tie sufficiently to keep Sydney at bay and complete a significant away win in Kogarah. The result also avenged their 1-0 defeat by the Sky Blues in the A-League elimination final in May.
The semi-final was only the second meeting between the clubs in the Australia Cup, following Sydney’s 1-0 victory over Victory in 2007. Both sides entered the contest as two-time winners of the competition.
Sydney had reached the last four after defeating SD Raiders 1-0, while Melbourne Victory needed extra time to overcome APIA Leichhardt by the same scoreline in the quarter-finals.
The other semi-final, between South Melbourne and Lions FC, will be played on September 15 to determine Victory’s opponents in the final.
