Carlton will not include their two first-round selections in a proposed deal for Greater Western Sydney defender Lachie Whitfield, despite the player’s preference to join the Blues if he is traded.
The club is prepared to offer pick 23 in this year’s draft, but intends to retain selections 11 and 16. Carlton need those picks to help cover a potential early bid for prized father-son prospect Cody Walker.
A bid for Walker at pick three by Richmond is considered highly feasible. Carlton would be close to matching it, although they would need to move slightly into deficit for the 2027 draft.
Lachie Whitfield completes Carlton medical
Whitfield has already undergone a medical with Carlton, who see the dashing defender as a player capable of improving their ability to run and carry the ball from defence.
Melbourne have also shown interest in Whitfield, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft. The Giants are willing to trade him as part of a reset of their list.
Whitfield remains contracted for 2027, meaning any move would require an agreement between the clubs. Carlton also hold Sydney’s first-round pick from the Charlie Curnow trade, as well as second-round selections 23 and 24, obtained from Gold Coast and North Melbourne respectively.
