New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump are due to hold their third in-person meeting at Gracie Mansion on Monday, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting will take place at the mayor’s official residence and will focus on “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers”, according to a spokesperson for Mr Mamdani.
The pair first met in the Oval Office in November last year, where they appeared to get along, before Mr Trump resumed referring to Mr Mamdani as a “lunatic”. Their second meeting took place in February.
Their latest encounter comes after a more distant public interaction at Game 3 of the NBA Finals in June. Both men attended the match, which the New York Knicks lost, but Mr Mamdani had made clear beforehand that he did not intend to speak with the president.
“If the president went to a game, that’s his decision to make. If I go to the game, I’ll be doing so separately,” Mr Mamdani said at the time.
The mayor and president have also clashed over Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr Mamdani said in an interview that Mr Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague”.
Mr Trump responded by saying Mr Netanyahu would not be arrested when he travelled to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting at Gracie Mansion will bring the two politicians together again as they discuss issues affecting New York and its residents.
