Newcastle United are monitoring Ajax centre-back Aaron Bouwman as a potential addition to Matthias Jaissle’s squad in 2027, although a move during the January transfer window is considered unlikely.
The 19-year-old has made notable progress in Amsterdam after breaking into Ajax’s first team. His emergence has attracted Newcastle’s attention as the club continues to focus on young players with senior experience and room to develop.
Newcastle monitoring Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman
Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke said he would be surprised if Newcastle acted in January, but suggested a move could become realistic next summer.
“I would be surprised if they make the move in January, but maybe next summer it could be on the cards,” O’Rourke said.
He added that Bouwman “ticks a lot of boxes” for Newcastle’s recruitment strategy, with the club increasingly seeking players who have “significant development potential and high ceilings.”
Bouwman had established himself as a regular starter for Ajax this season before an injury interrupted his progress in September. Chelsea have also previously monitored the Dutch youth international, potentially increasing the competition for his signature.
Newcastle’s interest is linked to the need to plan for the future of their defence. Fabian Schar is approaching the latter stages of his career, making succession planning increasingly important among the club’s senior defensive options.
Ajax have demonstrated their faith in Bouwman by handing him a contract running until June 2030. Director of football Marijn Beuker described the defender as combining “defensive reliability with footballing ability” and said he possessed “enormous potential”.
The length of that deal means Bouwman is unlikely to be a straightforward or inexpensive signing, but Newcastle could view him as a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution. By next summer, the Ajax defender could become a candidate to help shape a younger Newcastle defence.
