Caltrans has closed a 1.2-mile stretch of northbound Highway 101 at San Francisco’s Hospital Curve for a repaving project over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
The closure, covering the Bayshore Freeway between Cesar Chavez Street and 17th Street, began at 11pm on Friday, September 4, and is due to continue until Monday, September 7. The works are being carried out around the clock.
Crews are applying reinforced concrete paving as part of the wider Fab 4 Hospital Curve Rehabilitation Project, which began in autumn 2025. The scheme also includes drainage improvements, repairs to the central reservation and upgrades to signs, road markings and safety equipment.
Northbound motorists are being directed off Highway 101 at the Cesar Chavez exit, while southbound lanes remain open. Caltrans is advising drivers heading towards central San Francisco or the Bay Bridge to use northbound Interstate 280 instead.
The agency has warned of delays on surrounding roads and is encouraging people to avoid the work zone where possible, use public transport or allow extra time for their journeys.
A further full weekend closure of northbound Highway 101 at Hospital Curve is scheduled from Friday, September 18, until Monday, September 21.
The broader rehabilitation programme is expected to continue into 2028 and will cover 15.4 lane miles between Candlestick Point and San Francisco’s Mission District.
