A welfare check in Oswego, Illinois, turned into an hours-long police operation on Friday, September 25, after a gun was fired inside a home on Colchester Drive.
Officers were called to the 500 block of Colchester Drive at about 5.30am, where they declared an active scene. Police believe one person remains inside the property and said no injuries had been reported.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents nearby as officers worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion. The restricted area was later reduced from a one-mile radius to a quarter of a mile around Colchester Drive and Westford Place.
Police operation continues in Oswego
Kendall County Emergency Management first issued the order shortly after 4am. It was extended at about 5.19am and remained in force at 8am.
Police vehicles continued to move around the area during the morning, while armoured vehicles were positioned close to the scene. At least one officer was seen carrying a long gun.
Residents within the affected zone were told to remain indoors and avoid the area while police dealt with the incident.
The operation also disrupted school transport across Oswego Community Unit School District 308. No district school was inside the shelter-in-place area, but buses were not being sent into the restricted zone.
All schools were due to remain open, although the district warned of significant delays to bus services. Traughber Junior High was the only school still affected after the restricted area was reduced, while police were due to provide additional security at Traughber, Southbury and Prairie Point during pupil arrival.
Families living inside the shelter-in-place zone were advised not to leave their homes. Police said the order would remain in effect while they continued efforts to resolve the situation.
