All athletic activities at Penn Wood High School in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, have been suspended while the William Penn School District investigates an alleged incident said to raise concerns about the culture and climate within its sports programme.
The district announced on Thursday, October 15, that it had appointed an outside investigator to assess the information and conduct an objective review under its policies.
Investigation into Penn Wood athletics
Officials have not disclosed what allegedly happened, who may be involved or whether the matter relates to a particular team. They said student safety and wellbeing remained their highest priority.
Student-athletes will be invited to share their experiences through a climate survey, which the district said would help inform the investigation and identify areas requiring improvement.
Families have also been asked to share positive experiences within Penn Wood athletics by contacting the district’s communications department. Officials said the feedback would help establish what was working well as they considered changes to the programme.
The suspension has already affected the Penn Wood varsity football team, which forfeited its scheduled game against Chichester on Friday, October 16.
The district said the pause was intended to help create a safe and respectful environment for every student. It acknowledged that the decision would disappoint pupils, families, coaches and supporters, while stressing the importance of athletics in providing opportunities for connection, growth and teamwork.
No timescale has been given for the completion of the review or the return of Penn Wood sports. The William Penn School District has asked the community for patience while it examines the allegations and considers how to strengthen the culture of its athletics programme.
